Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was written in 1865 by Lewis Carroll whose real name was the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Alice is based on one of the three daughters of Henry George Liddell, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. Whilst boating one day he told the girls a story about a little girl called Alice who goes looking for adventure. Alice begged Dodgson to write it down and two years later gave her his handwritten manuscript of Alice’s Adventures with illustrations. The rest is history.
There are such amazing and memorable characters in Alice in Wonderland such as the White Rabbit who wears a waistcoat and mutters that he shall be too late. Alice follows him into the rabbit hole to Wonderland. Then there’s the Cheshire Cat who appears and disappears at will and gets her into sometimes amusing but often annoying conversations. At one point the Cheshire Cat disappears until nothing is left but his grin. Then, of course, there is the Queen of Hearts who plays croquet with a flamingo for a mallet and a hedgehog for a ball. She has a filthy temper and if anyone causes the slightest of offence she repeats “Off with their heads”.
A new movie version of the Alice in Wonderland is to be released through Walt Disney in Spring 2010. Directed by Tim Burton, it features a host of stars including Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.
